The Early Years: Setting the Foundation
The Texas Longhorns football program has a long and storied history, dating back to 1893. The Longhorns have won four national championships, 32 conference championships, and claim 93 All-Americans.
The program's first football coach was Henry Sawtelle. He’d post an 11-1 record in 1893.
The Longhorns played their first game on November 25, 1893, against the University of Texas Medical Branch. Texas won the game 34-0.
The Golden Age: National Championships and Heisman Trophies
The 1960s and 1970s were a golden age for Texas football. The Longhorns won three national championships during this time, in 1963, 1969, and 1970.
Darrell Royal was Texas coach during the golden age. He compiled a record of 167–46–5 and retired after the 1976 season.
Earl Campbell won the Heisman Trophy in 1977, and Ricky Williams won the award in 1998.
Texas would add a fourth National Championship in 2005 under coach Mack Brown.
Recent Years: Ups and Downs
The Longhorns have had mixed success in recent years. The team has won two Big 12 Championships since 2010, but they have not won a national championship since 2005.
Texas went through three head coaches (Charlie Strong, Tom Herman, and Steve Sarkisian) since firing Mack Brown after the 2013 season.
The Longhorns are hoping to return to their winning ways under new head coach Steve Sarkisian. Sarkisian was hired in 2021 after a successful stint as the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Alabama Crimson Tide football program is one of the most successful in college football history. The Crimson Tide have won 18 national championships, more than any other team.
Nick Saban has been the head coach of Alabama since 2007. Under Saban, the Crimson Tide have won six national championships.
