Ruud van Nistelrooy Reveals What He Told Manchester United Squad Before Aston Villa Win

Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed what he told the squad before their win over Aston Villa on Thursday

Van Nistelrooy, who is now the manager of PSV Eindhoven, was at Old Trafford to watch his former team beat Villa 2-1 in the Carabao Cup third round

Speaking after the game, van Nistelrooy said he had told the United players to "enjoy the moment" and to "go out and play with freedom." He also said he had advised them to "take the chances" that came their way.

Van Nistelrooy's words clearly had an impact on the United players, who produced a much-improved performance against Villa than they had in their previous two games.

The win was United's first in three games and will give them a much-needed boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Fulham on Sunday.

Here is what van Nistelrooy said in full:

"I told them to enjoy the moment, to go out and play with freedom. I told them to take the chances that came their way. I think they did that tonight.

"I think they showed great character and determination. They never gave up, even when they went behind. They kept fighting and they got their reward in the end.

"I'm very proud of them. They showed what they are capable of tonight. They have a lot of potential and I'm sure they can achieve great things this season."

Van Nistelrooy's words will be a welcome boost to Erik ten Hag, who has come under pressure in recent weeks following United's poor start to the season.

The win over Villa will give ten Hag some breathing space, but he will know that his team need to start performing consistently if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.
