SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Lawmakers in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir scuffled on Tuesday over calls for partial autonomy for the disputed region, with one member throwing a chair at another.

The incident occurred during a debate in the state legislative assembly in Srinagar, the region's main city. Lawmakers from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opposed a resolution calling for the restoration of Article 370, a constitutional provision that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

History of Autonomy Dispute

Article 370 was revoked by the Indian government in 2019, angering many Kashmiris who considered it a symbol of their identity. The move triggered widespread protests and a security clampdown in the region.

The resolution, introduced by the main opposition National Conference party, sought to restore Article 370's provisions on autonomy, including the right to a separate constitution and flag.

During the debate, BJP lawmaker Rajiv Jasrotia threw a chair at National Conference member Mohammad Akbar Lone, sparking a brief scuffle. Lone was not injured.
