"I Apologize if I Have Erred": CJI Chandrachud Apologizes in Final Speech as Chief Justice
Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud apologized for any errors he may have made during his tenure in his final speech as CJI.
Speaking at a function organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Chandrachud said, "I apologize if I have erred in any way. I have always tried to do my best, but I am human and may have made mistakes."
Justice Chandrachud's apology was well-received by the SCBA members present at the function. Senior advocate Vikas Singh, who was the president of the SCBA at the time, said, "Justice Chandrachud's apology shows his humility and greatness. He is a true role model for all judges and lawyers."
Justice Chandrachud's tenure as CJI was marked by several landmark judgments.
He led the bench that decriminalized homosexuality, struck down the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act, and upheld the right to privacy. He also played a key role in reforming the judicial system, introducing e-filing and e-courts to make justice more accessible to the common man.
Justice Chandrachud retired as CJI on November 10, 2023, after a tenure of two years. He was succeeded by Justice UU Lalit.
