Chadron State Rallies To Stop Jimmies’ Upset Bid

Chadron Rallies From 10 Points Down in Fourth Quarter

Chadron State College rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter against their rival University of Jamestown to secure a 23-17 victory and avoid their first home loss of the season. Despite trailing 17-7 entering the final period, the Eagles outscored the Jimmies 16-0 over the final 15 minutes to improve their record to 5-1 on the season. The loss drops Jamestown to 3-3.

Jimmies Strike First

Jamestown started the game with impressive ball control, sustaining a 16-play, 72-yard drive that chewed up nearly half of the first quarter. The drive was capped off by a four-yard touchdown run by senior running back Robert Turner. Following a Chadron fumble, the Jimmies extended their lead to 10-0 on a 32-yard field goal by junior kicker Cade Peterson.

Chadron finally got on the board early in the second quarter when junior quarterback Jaylen Lowe capped off an 11-play, 73-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown scamper. The touchdown cut the Jamestown lead to 10-7 entering halftime.

Turnovers Costly for Jamestown

Jamestown controlled the game for much of the third quarter and appeared poised to take control of the game. However, the Jimmies' offense sputtered in the red zone, settling for two field goals to extend their lead to 16-7. In the fourth quarter, the Jimmies' mistakes proved costly as they turned the ball over twice. A fumble by Turner was recovered by Chadron's sophomore linebacker Chase Klein, who returned it 15 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 16-14.

Jamestown's ensuing drive stalled, and Chadron took over at their own 34-yard line with 6:39 remaining. The Eagles drove the length of the field in nine plays, with sophomore running back David Washington punching it in from two yards out to give Chadron their first lead of the game, 20-16. A 32-yard field goal by junior kicker Wyatt Wragge with 2:03 remaining extended the lead to 23-16.

Eagles Defense Shines

Chadron's defense came up with a big stop on Jamestown's final drive, forcing a turnover on downs to seal the victory. The Eagles' defense held Jamestown to just 80 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter and forced four turnovers on the afternoon.

Chadron’s Lowe Named Player of the Game

Lowe was named the game's Player of the Game after completing 16-of-25 passes for 184 yards and rushing for 77 yards and a touchdown. Washington led the Eagles' rushing attack with 107 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown, while senior wide receiver Josh Hough hauled in five passes for 72 yards.

Jimmies’ Offense Struggles

Jamestown's offense struggled to find a rhythm throughout the game, particularly in the passing attack. Junior quarterback Cade Brinling was just 9-of-21 passing for 90 yards and was intercepted once. Turner led the Jimmies' rushing attack with 82 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown, while junior wide receiver Jake Johnson caught three passes for 38 yards.

Conclusion

Chadron State's comeback victory was a tale of two halves. The Eagles' defense came up big in the second half, forcing four turnovers and holding Jamestown to just 80 yards of total offense. Chadron's offense also stepped up in the fourth quarter, driving the length of the field twice to score the game-winning touchdowns.
