Central Coast Mariners' Win Against Western Sydney Wanderers Extends Lead at the A-League Women Top
Logarzo Brace Helps Mariners Secure Crucial Victory
Central Coast Mariners have extended their lead at the top of the A-League Women ladder with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at Commbank Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Mariners came into the match knowing that a win would see them open up a four-point lead over second-placed Melbourne Victory, who have a game in hand. And they made a perfect start, taking the lead in just the 6th minute through a stunning strike from Chloe Logarzo.
Logarzo's Second Seals the Win
The Wanderers fought back bravely and equalised in the 25th minute through a goal from Catherine Cannuli. But Logarzo struck again in the 55th minute to restore the Mariners' lead and ultimately secure the three points.
The win is a huge boost for the Mariners' title hopes, and it also gives them a psychological advantage over the Wanderers, who they could potentially meet again in the finals.
Mariners Dominate the First Half
The Mariners started the match brightly and took the lead early on through Logarzo's stunning strike. The Australian international collected the ball on the left wing and drove into the Wanderers' penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot into the top corner.
The Mariners continued to dominate the first half and created a number of other chances to extend their lead. However, they were unable to find the back of the net again, and the Wanderers managed to equalise in the 25th minute through Cannuli.
Cannuli's goal came against the run of play, but it gave the Wanderers a much-needed boost and they began to get more into the game.
Logarzo Strikes Again to Secure the Win
The second half was a more even contest, but the Mariners eventually regained the lead in the 55th minute through Logarzo's second goal of the match.
Logarzo's goal came after a good run down the left wing from Caitlin Foord. Foord crossed the ball into the box and Logarzo was on hand to finish from close range.
The Mariners held on to their lead in the closing stages of the match to secure a valuable three points.
Mariners Extend Lead at the Top
The win sees the Mariners extend their lead at the top of the A-League Women ladder to four points over second-placed Melbourne Victory.
The Mariners now have just two games remaining in the regular season, and they will be confident of securing the Premiers' Plate if they can maintain their current form.
The Wanderers, meanwhile, remain in fifth place on the ladder and will need to win their remaining two games if they want to qualify for the finals.
