Primates escaped from a private residence

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is searching for several primates that escaped from a private residence on St. Helena Island on Monday, January 23, 2023. The primates include two squirrel monkeys, two marmosets, and a patas monkey.

The monkeys were last seen in the area of Sams Point Road and Sea Island Parkway.

The monkeys are not considered dangerous, but they are wild animals and should not be approached. If you see the monkeys, please call the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office at 843-524-2777.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating the escaped primates. Anyone who sees the monkeys is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 843-524-2777.

The Sheriff’s Office is also reminding the public that it is illegal to possess primates without a permit. Anyone who is found to be in possession of a primate without a permit could be charged with a crime.
